Midwifery is part of the nursing services, even it is registered under similar regulatory body. In UK general and specialist nurses registered to Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). From the name of the council, midwifery is also controlled by this council. The basic different between nurse and midwifery is the fact that midwifery focus more on the care to childbearing women during the pregnancy. They help in labor and birth including the postpartum period. The newborn babies’ care also midwifery responsibilities. Within the first six weeks, midwifery will assist the mothers in breastfeeding, for example.
Even though the name for professional in midwifery is midwife, the male midwife also exists. The female midwifery however is more common in nurses jobs. In their practice, midwifery provides more than just service in pregnancy and birth. The focus of patients of midwifery is the mothers with a low-risk pregnancy who are expected to have natural birth experience. When they find deviations from normal birth, midwifery will refer the mothers to obstetricians. The abnormal birth is already out of their nurses jobs. Obstetricians will actively make intervention to support the abnormal birth. As we know, the most famous intervention is the surgery. In the order continuum, midwifery only deals with the normal birth and trained not to make any intervention unless necessary.
