Metastasis through the lymphatic systemKnowing the location of lymph nodes and the direction of flow of lymph is important in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer spread through metastasis.

Cancer cells can spread through the lymphatic system and produce aggregate of tumor cells where they lodge. These secondary tumor sites are predictable by the direction of lymphatic flow from the primary organ involved.

Cancer can also spread through the cardiovascular system (hematogenous) or local area in a cavity adjacent or a nearby organ.

The main clinical feature of whether a node is of neoplastic origin is that the touch feel enlarged, not painful (in general) and of stony consistency. Most of the lymph nodes are enlarged suffering caused by infection, in contrast to the neoplastic are not as strong and they are painful.
