Most lung cancer begins in the lining of the bronchi, the tubes in which the trachea or windpipe divides. However, asbestos lung cancer can also begin in other areas such as the trachea, bronchioles (small branches of the bronchi) or alveoli (air sacs in the lungs). Although lung cancer usually develops slowly, when this occurs, cancer cells can break away and spread to other parts of the body.

The two most common types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer (SCLC), in which cancer cells are small and round, and the cancer non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in which cells are larger cancerous. Sometimes, a cancer has characteristics of both types, and is called mixed small cell and large cell cancer.

Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for almost 80% of lung cancers. Auditors small cell lung cancer 20% of all lung cancer (American Cancer Society, lung cancer). Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canada and one of the most deadly. Five years after diagnosis, only 14% of people with this disease are still alive. By comparison, 88% of women with breast cancer are alive five years after diagnosis.

Smoking is by far the leading cause of lung cancer, but cancer can also result from exposure to secondhand smoke tobacco or substances such as asbestos, radon gas and gasoline vapors .

Lung cancer takes two main forms: a small cell “(the most dangerous) and non-small cell. This last category is itself divided into three subgroups: adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell undifferentiated. There are other forms, but they are much rarer.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer may be present for several years without any symptoms are evident. However, the most common symptoms are:

Cancer is one of the words that everyone dreads. There are various types of cancer and all types of cancer really bad news. All types of cancer that threatens the life of (this makes them so horrible). Even with all the medical advances we still do not have a complete drug for all types of cancer. Smoking increases from 10 to 25 times the risk of being diagnosed with lung cancer. This is by far the main risk factor.

Other factors may also play a role, such as:

* Secondhand smoke;
* Exposure to carcinogens (asbestos, radon, gasoline fumes, etc.).

* Frequent exposure to air pollution;

Preventing

* Do not smoke or quit.

Lung cancer can be treated by various therapies that are often used in combination to provide optimal outcomes for patients. Surgical resection is the surgical process in which the tumor, and is usually recommended if the cancer has not metastasized (or spread) outside the lungs to other parts of the body.

There are several options for doing that may involve resection of minimally invasive surgery or full operation. The technique used will depend on many factors, especially the size and stage of cancer and tumors are accessible to a surgeon.

Thoracotomy performed by a surgeon makes an incision through the chest wall and the average sternotomy performed by entering the chest cavity through the sternum. The second method is usually used in surgery for lung cancer, but they simply involve the discomfort and prolonged patient stay in hospital with a recovery period longer.

Alternative operating procedures including anterior limited Thoracotomy (ALT) which involves a small incision to allow entry, again through the front of the chest. It should be emphasized that the incision is much smaller than the standard or average Thoracotomy sternotomy. An alternative is the anterior axillary Thoracotomy (AAT) which involves a small incision in the chest near the armpit, but eventually, there was postero-lateral Thoracotomy (PLT) which involves the incision of the patient’s back or side of the trunk.

Even with this improved surgical techniques, a patient will experience pain big enough if the operation involves opening the chest (sometimes called the doctor as “cracking the chest”).

As a consequence of prolonged recovery and the patient discomfort, surgical techniques have been developed that do not involve large-scale operation – it is called, minimal-invasive technique.

Video-assisted thoracoscopy (VAT) using a high powered video cameras and hi-definition screen in combination with the diagnostic scans, such as CT or PET scans, to target tumors in the lungs of patients. Incision is required is much smaller and do not need to open the chest cavity resulting in much less discomfort for patients and greatly reduced recovery period. Using the video display, the surgeon can resect the tumor that had been identified during the diagnosis stage and phase.

Some doctors do caution, however the use of VAT, as the traditional Thoracotomy can reveal tumors and other metastatic cancers that have not been found in the scans and initial diagnosis. If this still has not found the cancer can return and the patient will become sick again and for this reason, VAT is usually recommended for early stage (I & II) and cancer has not spread to other parts of the lungs and body.

This is very normal for any surgical procedure must be accompanied by a phase of chemotherapy or radiation treatments to ensure that cancer patients have been completely removed or killed. How the treatment and at what stage a particular therapy will be recommended will be determined by the type and stage of lung cancer patients have.

The ideal anticancer drug should only be able to destroy malignant cells without causing adverse effects to the body, but this option does not exist, because the nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy can be so strong that patients abandon the treatment reach , which severely limits their recovery.

However, chemotherapy treatment is essential to remove malignant tumors and thus achieve healing. To reverse and control the adverse effects of nausea and vomiting caused by the chemotherapy, science has developed substances called antiemetic can minimize or even eliminate these side effects.

During the 41st annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO, by its initials in English) held in Orlando, Florida, Professor Matti S. Aapro, Director of the Multidisciplinary Oncology Institute in Genolier, Switzerland, presented data from an epidemiological study entitled Comparison of aprepitant combination regimen with 4-day ondansetron + 4-day dexamethasone for prevention of acute and delayed nausea / vomiting after cisplatin chemotherapy. The study results showed that treatment with aprepitant (Emend) is superior to the scheme of several days with ondansetron and dexamethasone to prevent nausea and vomiting induced by highly emetogenic chemotherapy (nausea and frequent vomiting).

In that study, the drug regimen performed better than the treatment of several days only with others, both in the acute phase and in the late after chemotherapy with high dose cisplatin.

“This study demonstrates the clinical benefit of the scheme with aprepitant (Emend) in the full cycle of treatment in both acute and delayed phase in patients treated with cisplatin. Clinical studies like this reinforce the new parameters of antiemetic treatment guidelines as recommended by the Multinational Association for Supportive Care Cancer (MASCC), “said Professor Matti Aapro, also President of the MASCC.

This multinational, randomized, double-blind study, evaluated 484 patients undergoing chemotherapy and analyzed the complete response rates-defined as no vomiting and no rescue medication use, in the acute phase (from 0 to 1 days ), late (2 to 5 days) and globally (1 to 5 days) as the first line antiemetic therapy in patients receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy.

Before selecting the most appropriate antiemetic for each patient, it is important to know that all chemotherapy drugs act differently and may have several side effects. The most important thing a patient can do to reduce the occurrence of nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy is to talk with your medical oncologist about antiemetics that have been prescribed and they have given satisfaction.
